COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

CANTONESE COURSE - for non-native speakers of Chinese

 

All non-native speakers of Chinese in UGC funded postgraduate programmes are eligible to take courses listed below, up to 6 credits per term. Those students in self-financed programmes who are interested in taking these courses will be charged HK$4,620 per 3-credit course for the academic year 2013-14. Introduction to Chinese Scripts

An elementary course to introduce basic Chinese characters with real life examples. Introduction will also be given to the formation of Chinese characters, stroke order, and the interesting stories behind some Chinese.

Application of Vocabulary and Grammar I

An elementary course designed to familiarize students with the use of Romanization, basic vocabulary and grammar points. Vocabulary introduced based on everyday conversations and daily usage. Focus will be on appropriateness in application.

Oral Skills Practice I

An elementary course focused on students’ fluency in communication with basic vocabulary and grammar points through various kinds of speaking practice. Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc.

An elementary course designed to familiarize students with basic vocabulary and grammar points through language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises. Daily real life settings are introduced.

Listening Comprehension and Communication Skills I

An elementary course focuses on building up students’ listening ability in real life context. Everyday settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc.

Basic Presentation Skills and Daily Situations

An elementary course which helps students to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings. Tasks like picture description, speaking topics and simple presentation will be adopted to train students in presentation with various everyday settings.

An advanced course designed to build up the students’ confidence in using a variety of vocabulary in formal settings through specific topics and contextualized exercises. Topics include various local news and issues related to our society, such as education system, economy and immigration.

An advanced course designed to further improve students’ fluency in professional communication settings through language activities, role playing and discussion practice. An advanced course designed to train students’ presentation and negotiation ability in professional settings. Topics for discussion include various local & international news and issues related to our society, such as education system, economy and immigration.

Courses designed for different kinds of working professional, such as businesspersons, bankers, financial consultants, education specialists, religious and social workers, etc. Sector specific trainings are designed to cater for advanced students’ needs, e.g. the Cantonese for religious workers course provides training on Bible reading, Sunday liturgy and mass liturgy.

Communication in Context VI – Cantonese PRINCH (ALS)

A task-based course designed to provide advanced level students with the opportunity to use language in real life for real communication purposes. It allows students to practice what they have learned in class through a variety of activities in the target culture, focusing on topics related to social, political and economic issues. Class format consists of three parts, (1) Classroom activities with teachers, (2) Theme-based trip in small groups led by teachers or teaching assistants, and (3) Post-trip tasks with teachers, such as Q&A, discussion and presentation.

 

PUTONGHUA COURSES – for non-native speakers of Chinese

 

All non-native speakers of Chinese in UGC funded postgraduate programmes are eligible to take courses listed below, up to 6 credits per term. Those students in self-financed programmes who are interested in taking these courses will be charged HK$4,620 per 3-credit course for the academic year 2013-14. Application of Vocabulary and Grammar I

An elementary course designed to students who have no knowledge of Chinese language. It aims at familiarizing students with the use of basic vocabulary and grammar points. Vocabulary introduced based on everyday conversations and daily usage. Focus will be on appropriateness in application.

 

Upon completion of the course with CPTH1123, students will move up to study CPTH1133 and CPTH1153. For students who wants to study Putonghua level 2 or above, they are invited to join the Putonghua placement offered by CLC. Students who have completed higher level of similar Putonghua courses are not allowed to take this course.

Oral Skills Practice I

An elementary course designated to students who have no knowledge of Putonghua. It focuses on students’ oral skills and listening ability. Students will achieve fluency in communication with basic vocabulary and grammar points through various kinds of speaking practice. Real life settings are introduced such as greeting, asking directions, ordering of food, shopping, etc.

 

Upon completion of the course, students will move up to study CPTH1133 and CPTH1153. For students who wants to study Putonghua level 2 or above, they are invited to join the Putonghua placement offered by CLC. Students who have completed higher level of similar Putonghua courses are not allowed to take this course.

Communication in Context I – Putonghua

An elementary course designed to students who have completed CPTH1113 and CPTH1123. For students who have not completed any of the above courses, they are invited to join the Putonghua placement offered by CLC. Students who have completed higher level of similar Putonghua courses are not allowed to take this course.

 

Course contents focus on enriching students’ vocabularies and grammar points through language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises. Students will be able to collect information through asking and answering questions and communicate under real life contexts. Topic include simple introduction of oneself, frequently asked questions on travel related issues and provide information, etc.

Listening and Reading Comprehension Skills I

An elementary course focused on building up students’ listening ability in real life context. Everyday settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc.

 

CPTH1153

Basic Presentation Skills and Daily Situations I

An elementary course designed to students who have completed CPTH1113 and CPTH1123. For students who have not completed any of the above courses, they are invited to join the Putonghua placement offered by CLC. Students who have completed higher level of similar Putonghua courses are not allowed to take this course.

 

Course contents focus on improving students’ pronunciation, enhancing their speaking and listening ability of Putonghua, helping them to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings. Tasks like picture description, speaking topics and simple presentation will be adopted to train students in presentation with various everyday settings.

The course is designed to equip students with communicative skills to meet their daily needs in Putonghua such as seeking help from passerby, from police or from doctor, etc. through language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises in real life settings.

Course contents focus on helping students to improve their proficiency to communicate in authentic situations by integrating the newly acquired vocabulary items and grammar structures.

The course aims at increasing students’ ability in reading articles from Chinese media and presenting their opinions on various topics. Students will expand their vocabulary bank and improve their presentation skills through reading extract of articles, discussion and presentation.

Speech Preparation and Presentation Skills

An advanced course designed to students who have completed CPTH3333 or CPTH3353. For students who have not completed the above course, they are invited to join the Putonghua placement offered by CLC.

 

The course is designed for students who want to improve their expression proficiency. Students will receive feature articles in different languages and are invited to express their opinion in Putonghua through a series of training include reading, listening comprehension, group discussion and oral presentation. Language functions include introduction; comparison; suggestion and description.

Advanced Topical Conversation – Hot Topic

An advanced course designed to students who have completed CPTH3333 or CPTH3353. For students who have not completed the above course, they are invited to join the Putonghua placement offered by CLC.

 

The course is designed to enhance students' ability in using Putonghua to have a deeper discussion on selected daily life topics. Students will be enriched with related terminologies through a series of training include listening comprehension, oral presentation, group discussion, etc.

Elementary Cantonese for Chinese Speakers

This is a fundamental course on Cantonese which introduces the “Yale Romanization Scheme” of Cantonese. Course contents include basic daily conversation, vowels and tone exercises and pronunciation practice. It enables learners to understand the “Yale Romanization Scheme” and engage in real life conversation by using simple Cantonese.

An intermediate course for students who have completed CCAN1703 or CCAN2013. For students who have not completed any of the above course, they are invited to take a Cantonese placement test offered by CLC. Course contents focus on social topics. Trainings in different contexts can increase students' vocabulary. It also improves their pronunciation and exchange of ideas in different social activities. Furthermore, it assists them to complete a number of tasks in school or working environments.

This course equips students with various advanced communicative skills in various academic and professional settings, such as seminars, meetings, group discussions, debate, presentations, performance, impromptu speaking etc. Students are trained to speak in connected discourse in academic and professional settings with different level of formality.

Elementary Putonghua

An elementary course designed to students who want to acquire basic knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin and enhance their communicative ability of Putonghua in daily situation.

 

Course contents focus on reading skills and daily conversations. Through a series of systematic training on consonants, vowels, tones, phonetic identification and comparison of Putonghua and Cantonese terminologies, students can gain knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin. Eventually, they will be equipped with the skills on listening to short phrases in Putonghua.

 

E-learning laboratory sessions not only provide target training on pronunciation and listening, but also allow students to complete online exercises, conduct recording and test or examination.

Intermediate Putonghua

An intermediate course designed for students who have already acquired basic knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin and able to conduct simple conversations in Putonghua in daily situations. The course aims to strengthen their knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin, correct pronunciation, increase vocabulary under different real life settings. The course is targeted at students who have the capability to present ideas in short connected utterances. It will further build up their vocabulary list related to social daily real life settings especially developing their oral skills in delivering speeches at public occasions.

 

Course contents cover a numbers of social life topics. Through different real life settings, it could increase students’ vocabulary. Common pronunciation mistakes, difference between Putonghua and Cantonese words and phrases will be included which allow students to present their ideas under a variety of circumstances especially completing tasks in learning and working environments. Course contents cover news reporting and discussion on current affairs. Students will take the initiative to collect news for reporting. Their speaking ability in both formal and informal situations will be enhanced through extracting, combining and reproducing news contents. While sessions on discussion on current affairs enable them to learn a wide range of vocabularies on different topics and introduce the difference between Putonghua and Cantonese words and phrases which meet the ultimate goal of the course i.e. to equip students with the ability to discuss any affairs happen around the world.
