Navigating New Horizons: How CUHK Transformed One Student’s Legal Journey
In the world of legal education, few experiences are as transformative as pursuing an advanced degree abroad.
For Finn Kordes, the decision to study at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has proven to be a life-changing journey, one in which he calls “one of the most enriching and exciting in my life”.
Finn’s lifelong fascination with law began at an early age. “I was inspired by its vital role in shaping society and ensuring order in a constitutional state,” he says. But it was during his time doing his domestic legal education in Germany where he found his passion to specialise in environmental law.
“I always maintained a strong passion for environmental issues, with topics such as nature conservation, renewable energy and especially sustainable waste management close to my heart,” he recalls.
Broadening Horizons
After completing his first degree in law, he sought an international academic experience to pursue his master’s degree.
“I compared options in the EU, UK, USA and Hong Kong,” he said. “But while the UK and US programmes were prestigious, they lacked focus on EU law and were prohibitively expensive.”
Eventually, he discovered the LLM in Energy and Environmental Law programme at CUHK. He cites the programme’s unique blend of international, European and Chinese law that ultimately drew him in. “This combination was not available anywhere else,” he says. “In addition, there are strong candidates on the professor side, from the EU, Anglo-Saxon countries and China. This incomparable mix is a very exciting geographical and cultural environment which prompted me to take this step.”
Support Along the Way
Aside from that, Finn recognised that studying abroad meant financial considerations played a role in his decision. “The cost of living in Hong Kong is quite high,” he admits. Fortunately, he received the Master of Laws Global Scholarship after accepting his offer, which alleviated his financial worries. “This opportunity allowed me to focus on my studies without the stress of money.”
Indeed, this was exciting for Finn, as CUHK's LLM programme is distinguished not just for its curriculum but also because it boasts an enriching learning environment. “CUHK campus itself is modern and spacious, with well-designed learning spaces,” he describes. The programme also included plenty of hands-on practical experiences, such as a visit to the Lamma Island Power Station. “This trip was unforgettable and deeply enriching,” he notes. “We learned about the plant's transition to green hydrogen, which brought theory to life.”
Adapting to New Environments
However, he says that studying in Hong Kong still presented its own set of challenges. “Rebuilding everything required for a regular life was tough,” he shares. But he found plenty of support through the university network.
“I gradually found my way around and grew to love life in Hong Kong.” He also says that he faced the challenge of adapting to a new legal environment, but he eventually made it through and the experience broadened his horizons.
“During my studies in Germany, I frequently engaged with international legal frameworks, particularly in environmental law. My master’s programme significantly deepened and broadened this understanding, especially through my first encounter with Chinese law and its unique mechanisms,” he says, noting that it significantly strengthened him in ways that he never imagined.
A Unique Cultural Experience
Studies aside, Finn notes that since many of his classmates came from China, it gave him the unique opportunity and insight into a brand-new culture.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in the language and culture,” he explains. Through interactions with classmates and professors, he gained insights into both cultural nuances and professional etiquette. “These experiences enriched my understanding of interpersonal dynamics,” he adds.
So for those considering the LLM programme at CUHK, he has one piece of advice: “Step out of your comfort zone and explore a new environment”. He emphasises the welcoming atmosphere of Hong Kong, where students can find a sense of belonging amidst a large international community. “CUHK goes above and beyond to support its international students, and its academic reputation speaks for itself,” he says.
Looking back on his time at CUHK, he acknowledges the profound impact it has had on his life. “Without my time at CUHK, I would have missed out on invaluable experiences that continue to enrich my life,” he reflects. “I forged new friendships, found a wonderful partner, and grew both personally and professionally.”
