Chasing Gravitational Waves: A PhD Journey at CUHK
When Laura Uronen set her sights on a PhD in physics, she was laser-focused on one thing: gravitational wave research. Little did she know that her journey would lead her to the vibrant halls of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where she found her perfect match.
“The University is affiliated with the global LIGO Scientific Collaboration,” Laura said. “I knew it would let me dive deep into data analysis and statistical methods, it really fit perfectly to the kinds of things I wanted to study.”
The LIGO Scientific Collaboration is a powerhouse of international physics institutes dedicated to unravelling the mysteries of gravitational waves. As Laura explored CUHK further, she discovered even more reasons to be excited.
“The more I dug into CUHK, the more it captivated me — the studentship, the allure of being in Hong Kong, and the University’s stellar ranking,” she shared.

A swift and warm response from CUHK eventually sealed the deal. “They got back to me so quickly, saying: ‘Absolutely, we want you to come here!’ I knew right then to stop applying elsewhere—CUHK was the place for me!”
Embracing New Challenges
Fast forward a year and a half, and Laura is thriving in her PhD journey. The challenges and rewards of studying at CUHK's PhD in Physics programme have been nothing short of exhilarating. The inclusive environment and diverse international research group have helped the PhD student from Finland to navigate cultural and language differences.
“One thing that really stood out to me was the work culture,” Laura explained. “In Europe, it’s a strict nine-to-five routine, but in Hong Kong, it feels a bit stricter in some ways and more relaxed in others. It’s an exciting blend!”

CUHK’s support has been a game-changer for Laura. With language classes in Cantonese and Mandarin, she’s bonded with local students and embraced the rich tapestry of cultural exchange.
“It’s a different work culture, but if you’re ready for it, you can really thrive,” she said.
Cross-Disciplinary Opportunities
One of the most thrilling aspects of CUHK, she explained, is its commitment to cross-disciplinary research. Laura’s background in astrophysics is beautifully complemented by the integration of more classical and theoretical physics, which has been hugely beneficial to her, opening doors she never imagined.
“We have all these journal clubs where our research group and some of the other astro groups just come together and we present papers from black holes to cosmic events,” Laura explained. “We even have ongoing collaborations with HKU, which means tons of interaction and shared ideas!”
Thanks to these opportunities that extend beyond just the curriculum, she has had plenty of opportunity to work with many other departments and universities in Hong Kong.
Networking and Growth
These collaborative experiences, paired with CUHK’s generous support for conference travel through the HKPFS, have been pivotal for Laura’s journey.
“I’ve had the chance to attend multiple conferences, often combining them with visits to my collaborators,” she said.

The travel and networking opportunities have truly set Laura’s experience apart. “Compared to my peers in Europe, CUHK students seem to be jet-setting all the time! My friends over there don’t attend nearly as many conferences as we do.”
Beyond the academic gains, these experiences have supercharged Laura’s professional development. She’s built a robust network and collaborated with researchers from around the globe, honing valuable presentation and communication skills that will serve her well in her future endeavours.
Advice for Prospective Students
As Laura reflects on her time at CUHK, she says the University has the ideal blend of academic rigour, global collaboration and plenty of opportunity for personal growth. Indeed, she has some heartfelt advice for aspiring international students: dive in headfirst!
“If you choose to go for it, really commit yourself,” she urged, knowing homesickness might be part of the equation. “It can feel strange at first, but accepting those feelings can make all the difference in integrating into this amazing environment.”
With CUHK’s supportive atmosphere and Laura’s unwavering determination, her PhD journey is shaping up to be a resounding success. "It's been fantastic! Sure, there are challenges—PhDs are demanding—but CUHK truly delivers! The support is incredible, and there’s always something happening."
